1. Where did clogging come from?

Clogging is a truly American dance form that began in the Appalachian Mountains and now enjoys widespread popularity throughout the United States and around the world.

As the Appalachians were settled in the mid 1700’s by the Irish, Scottish, English and Dutch-Germans, the folk dances of each area met and began to combine in an impromptu foot-tapping style, the beginning of clog dancing as we know it today. Accompanied by rousing fiddle and bluegrass music, clogging was a means of personal expression in a land of newfound freedoms.

The word “Clog” comes from the Gaelic, and means “time”. Clogging is a dance that is done in time with the music -to the downbeat usually with the heel keeping rhythm.

As clogging made its way to the flatlands, other influences shaped it. From the Cherokee Indians, to African Blacks and Russian Gypsies, clogging has enveloped many different traditions to become truly a “melting pot” of step dances.

2. What’s the difference between a regular clogging tap and a buck tap?

As you can see by the picture below, the Steven’s StomperTM Buck Tap has a steel flange on the toe.  This steel flange serves two main purposes:

  1. Provides more sound when a clogger hits their toes on the floor.
  2. Semi-protects the toe of the shoe (semi means that it will protect some but not necessarily prevent wear and tear)

If you are new to clogging, either tap will work.

Many advanced cloggers prefer the Steven’s StomperTM Regular Tap because, if you are doing advanced steps like toe-stands, the steel flange can be a bit slick.

3. What size clogging heel tap do I need?

Most clogging shoes use the Steven’s Stomper Medium sized heel tap.

Small sizes for children use a small heel tap.

Men’s size 11 and above generally use a large heel tap.

4. Do you accept returns on clogging shoes?

Yes! Here is the ClogOn.com policy for returns:

Step 2: Go to ClogOn.com and order the new size and style you’d like to exchange for.

Step 3: Ensure that the shoes you currently have don’t have scuffs, marks, etc. In order to get a direct exchange, the shoes you are returning must be re-sellable.

6. What size clogging dance shoe is going to work best for me?

This is probably one of the toughest questions we are asked on a day to day basis at ClogOn.com. Our best recommendation is to order your street shoe size, or maybe even a half size bigger.

What we’ve seen is that it’s easier to add an insole or extra pair of socks and grow in to the shoes than it is to exchange them for a new size because they are too tight and don’t fit.

We recently conducted a survey about best size for clogging shoes. Take the survey and we’ll share the results.
